Prologue: But If You Try Sometimes

I didn’t hear the crash that Tuesday morning. I never hear it on that particular day. It doesn’t worry me, though, because at some point I realized that it wasn’t something I could change. What I do hear, coming from the room beside me, is some faint sobbing.
I step out into the apartment’s small living room and see Kyle riveted to the television, her eyes already a deep red. Surprisingly, she’s wearing her pajamas. The clock reads 8:15, just like it always does this morning.
I know my role, know what I’m supposed to say. But this time, I don’t say it. I just sit down next to her, and turn my eyes to the television. The news report about the first crash is still playing, and panic is starting to set in at the television studios. With good reason, of course; they’re just blocks from it. It’s obvious what’s happening. The world is ending.
My world is ending. But in the later part of this day, it starts all over again.
