[Who, the hoodie guy?] I ask.
She shakes her head. [The man in the uniform,] she says. [I think you called him a 'cop'?]
I nod. [I kinda figured you did,] I say. [He sure took his sweet time.]
[But how did you know him?] she asks.
[I didn't,] I say, [until he told me who he was.]
[Did he?] she asks.
[Check this out,] I say. The cop is at his place right near the bank, and I grin at him maliciously. “Fat lot of help you were,” I say.
“So, you found the book, good,” he says. [I expected nothing less of the Interloper.]
[You could have come up to me sooner,] I say.
“Do the two of you need a room?” Kyle asks.
“Your nose is bleeding, miss,” the cop says. Sure enough, Kyle’s trip did leave her with a bloody nose. She touches her face, gasps when she feels the wetness on her upper lip, and starts rummaging in her purse for a tissue. [So, let's see, this is Miss du Maquette?]
[It's nice to meet you,] Maris says, bowing slightly. The cop returns the bow. [So can I go home now?]
“Whad ab dey sabin?” Kyle says.
“Maris’ parents called in,” I say, “and they checked in with him. She’s in his hands now.”
