A Civics Lesson (2009)
A Civics Lesson ran on the site from January 1st, 2009 to November 20th, 2009. As the first novel on the site, there were a few glitches here and there in terms of the presentation, but the story is still (in my opinion) the strongest opener to the Linguankery project. A printed version is forthcoming at some point in 2010.
Phillip Brookfield is a man who seemingly has it all: a beautiful, spacious house in the suburbs of Pittsburgh; two foster children, who are subject to doting and devotion; and a prestigious job at a local research organization. But his life comes to a crashing halt when his employer, the enigmatic Indigo Foundation, looks to recruit a friend of his children for an after-school advanced learning program called “Twilight Wings” that might just be a key to unlocking a mental power unlike anything the world has known to date. In trying to get little Rob MacKenzie to join, Phillip and his children, clever Gene and strong-willed Jeanne, will be faced with a problem nobody could have ever seen coming: when you can read minds, how far would you go to save a life?
Dedication: For John P. Zeitler, my father.
